Update Nextcloud From Terminal

Of note is the fact that the correct php version should be used, and alongside it, the correct php modules. Here is the list of required packages on Debian, with 8.X replaced by the desired php version:

libapache2-mod-php8.X php8.X php8.X-bcmath php8.X-bz2 php8.X-cli php8.X-common php8.X-curl php8.X-fpm php8.X-gd php8.X-gmp php8.X-igbinary php8.X-intl php8.X-mbstring php8.X-mysql php8.X-opcache php8.X-readline php8.X-redis php8.X-xml php8.X-zip

This is mostly necessary for when the web-based updater somehow doesn’t work. I have found that on slower hardware, each update step may generate a 504 timeout response. This may be normal, as if the updater web page is refreshed after a time, the step is completed.

In case the update is stuck at step 5 (verification), after manual verification the .step file located in updater-xxxxxxxx can be edited to change start to end - this skips verification

First go into the directory nextcloud_data. Then, run the command sudo -u www-data php8.3 updater/updater.phar

Then, you should upgrade your apps, either from the web view or with sudo -u www-data php occ app:update --all
